A skill is a reusable set of instructions that teaches Sixth how to do something specific: a release process, a document format, a testing routine, a design style. Skills load only when they’re needed, so you can install many of them without bloating every request.
How skills work
- Sixth always knows each installed skill’s name and description.
- When a request matches a skill, or you ask for one directly, Sixth loads that skill’s full instructions with the
use_skill tool and follows them.
- To call a skill yourself, type
/ followed by its name in the chat, for example /release-notes. Skills appear in the / menu.
Skill folders
Each skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file. Optional scripts/, references/ and assets/ folders can hold supporting files.
SKILL.md starts with YAML frontmatter, followed by the instructions in markdown:
Sixth loads skills from ~/.claude/skills/ in your home folder. The same skills are available in every project.
Managing skills
Click the Rules & Workflows button (the scales icon) in the message box toolbar and open the Skills tab. There you can:
- See every available skill under Available Skills, with its description.
- Switch a skill off to stop Sixth from using it, or back on.
- Create with AI: start a task where Sixth helps you design a new skill and writes the whole folder into
~/.claude/skills/.
- Create Manually: start a task where Sixth shows you the
SKILL.md format and walks you through setting up the folder yourself.
The skill-creator skill
Sixth installs a built-in skill-creator skill, marked built-in in the list. It guides the creation of new skills and can’t be switched off.
A good description matters most. Sixth decides when to load a skill from its description, so say what the skill does and when to use it.
