# Background Daemon

The Background Daemon runs Sixth as a background process on your machine, so your [Telegram](/features/telegram) bot stays connected and can receive and work on coding tasks even when VS Code is closed.

## Turning it on

1. Set up the [Telegram Relay](/features/telegram) first.
2. Open Sixth **Settings → Integrations** and find **Background Daemon**.
3. Turn on **Run background daemon**.

When it's running, the status reads **Daemon Active** with its process ID ("PID … — listening for messages"). Turn the toggle off to stop it.

## Requirements

The daemon runs on your system's Node.js (not the copy bundled inside VS Code), so Node.js must be installed and available on your `PATH`.

## Good to know

* The daemon runs on your machine. Your computer has to be on and awake for it to pick up messages.
* Its process files live in the `.sixth` folder in your home directory.
